This is where it all began. The first-ever Test on English soil was played here in September 1880, resulting in an England win over Australia by five wickets, with W. G. Grace scoring a hundred on debut, and this is where a Test series in England usually (though not always) ends. The Oval Cricket Ground contd.
More pertinently, this is the historic venue where the legend of the 'Ashes' was born a couple of years after the inaugural Test, in the second match in August 1882 to be played on English soil and the ninth in Test history. The Oval Cricket Ground contd. Australia batting first, was bowled out for 63. England, in reply, could muster only 101, the great F. R. Spofforth claiming 7 for 46 in 36.3 four ball overs, conceding only one scoring stroke while taking four wickets for two runs off his last 11 overs.
