some track facts

The Indianapolis Speedway was built originally as a test facility for the burgeoning Indiana car industry, the track was paved with 3.2 million bricks following a series of races in 1909. Since 1911, the Brickyard has hosted one of the most famous races in the world -- the Indianapolis motor speedway 500-Mile Race. In the inaugural 1994 Brickyard 400, Hoosier fan favorite Jeff Gordon won the first of his three titles.

The Indianapolis 500 in 2005

The "Accelerate Your Senses" theme, announced Oct. 19 by Indianapolis Motor Speedway and 500 Festival officials at IMS, will be prominent in local and national Indianapolis 500 advertising and promotional materials and 500 Festival event materials. The theme also will be an important part of the many events that take place in Indianapolis during the month of May, leading up to the 2005 Indianapolis motor speedway 500 on Sunday, May 29. Track activity opens Sunday May 8th with the 89th Indianapolis 500 scheduled to start at noon (local time) Sunday, May 29th 2005.
